Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. |
This week's topic is a freebie, so we decided to come up with the series we most want to finish this year!
If you know anything about me, you know how hard it is for me to finish anything. I am usually never ready to let go of a world, so a series either has to be so absolutely amazing that I just can't stand not finishing it, or already completed for me to have any chance of finishing. If I read the first book in the series pretty close to it's release date, the chances of me ever finishing the series are slim to none.
I am a pretty big TLC fan girl. I really have loved every single thing I have read by her. She has convinced me to try things I normally wouldn't read by anyone else. For example, a Greek mythology YA novel told from three different perspectives. Totally not up my alley, but I loved it! For some reason though, I have yet to continue on with this series.
Three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful Gorgon maligned in myth, must reunite and embrace their fates.
Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it's also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.
Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.
Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters. . . .
I tried and failed three times with starting Wither by this author, so I didn't have high hopes for Perfect Ruin. Thankfully, I still gave it a shot, because I seriously fell for this book! But I managed to read it the day after it was released, and long waits for the next book usually means I am not going to be continuing on with the series any time soon. Hopefully this year I can finish this trilogy up!
On the floating city, you can be anything you dream - a novelist or a singer, a florist or a factory worker... Your life is yours to embrace or to squander. There's only one rule: you don't approach THE EDGE. If you do, it's already over.
Morgan Stockhour knows getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though her older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. There’s too much for her at home: her parents, best friend Pen, and her betrothed, Basil. Her life is ordinary and safe, even if she sometimes does wonder about the ground and why it’s forbidden.
Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially once she meets Judas. Betrothed to the victim, Judas is being blamed for the murder, but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find—or whom she will lose.
Really, all of Kimberly Derting's series deserve a spot on this list, as I have yet to actually complete a single one. But that doesn't mean they aren't good! I have loved all of her worlds and characters so much. The reason The Taking won out, is because I tried starting Beyond over the past weekend and it reminded me so much of The Taking, I have actually been itching to start reading it again.
A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.
When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.
Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.
Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?
I really love Meg Cabot, as I have espoused a few times. And I read this first book in this series and really liked it, even though it definitely had the potential to move into too cheesy territory. But for some reason, I just can't motivate myself to pick up the last two books in the series, even though I own them!
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.
I am pretty sure that this series made our list the last time we did a topic like this one. Someday, I swear I am going to finish this series!
WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.
DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.
Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.
Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.
If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.
Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books--but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. We have lived among you without you knowing.
But they know.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.
I am Number Four.
I am next.
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died...
I remember loving the first 2 books!
When Dean raced out the door to catch the school bus, he didn’t realize it would be the last time he’d ever see his mom. After a freak hailstorm sends the bus crashing into a superstore, Dean and a group of students of all ages are left to fend for themselves.
They soon realize the hailstorm and the crash are the least of their worries. After seeing a series of environmental and chemical disasters ravage the outside world, they realize they’re trapped inside the store.
Unable to communicate with the ones they love, the group attempts to cobble together a new existence. As they struggle to survive, Dean and the others must decide which risk is greater: leaving… or staying.
I loved the first book but I was a little disappointed with the sequel, I still want to finish it!
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally.
But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel. But her father runs their house like an army barracks. and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere.
Ever.
So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met? Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David.
That doesn’t mean she won’t do it.
It just means she can't get caught. Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part.
After all, she can't really fall for a guy whose not exactly from here. As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she's to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

I loved Under The Nerve Sky and The 5th Wave. Great topic choice.
ReplyDeleteI've not read the '5th Wave' series, but surprisingly (and despite the general dislike), I really liked the film adaptation. Makes me wonder if I'd like to read the books. Hope you enjoy these series!
ReplyDeleteThanks, as always, for visiting Finding Wonderland.
I loved the movie and the guy that played Evan was hot, he was the perfect Evan! I really liked the movie.
DeleteSweet Venom looks GREAT- I mean descendants of Medusa??- yes please. And Monument 14- I remember those from a few yrs ago- I never did get to read those.
ReplyDeleteI never knew what Sweet Venom was about! It does sound good!
DeleteOh my gosh, am I horrible? I haven't read any of these. *runs away and hides* There are quite a few I do want to read and they're on my TBR. I want to read Under the Never Sky so badly.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
Sweet Venom sounds so unique, I might have to look into it. I have read the first two Monument 14 books and liked them too - don't know why I've never read the third. I also think I've read that first Estep novel but I clearly don't remember it and would have to reread it if I picked the series up again.
ReplyDeleteJennifer Estep series has a lot of books, and by now I can't remember very well what it was about, I would probably have to start them again, or look online what it was about.
DeleteI am actually probably the opposite in that I almost always will finish a series! I don't always finish the first book in the series if I'm really not feeling it but if I've finished the first book, then I will almost always continue with it, just to see how to series ends. Usually the only times I don't finish is when I have to wait a long time for the next book to come out. If I didn't love the series, then I often forget what happened previously.
ReplyDeleteSweet Venom sounds so interesting! I love Greek mythology re-tellings (the obvious one is Percy Jackson which is one of my all-time favorite series) and I'm definitely going to check this out!
The Lorien Legacies is also one of the series that I started but never finished! I think I read three or four but had to wait a long time for the next one to come out and I just forgot a lot of things. It was also hard to get into because it's first-person narration and all the different characters sound the exact same.
I used to finish series, but waiting a year for each books it makes me lose my interest in most of them ( with the exception of Falling Kingdoms , I love these books).
DeleteUnder The Never Sky is one of my favorites! I still need to finish The 5th Wave series as well... I'm also 2-3 books into The Lorien Legacies, but I'm not really feeling it anymore so I'm not sure I'll still finish. Maybe someday :)
ReplyDeleteI love the Lorien Legacies but I need to be in an Alien reading mood to continue with them. I only need to finish the last two books.
DeleteI only read Under the Never Sky as well. I meant to finish the series, but never got around to it. Really not sure if I ever will. I was also disappointed with The Infinite Sea. I love the 5th Wave, but did not enjoy the trajectory of the story in the second book. Still haven't finished this series either.
ReplyDeleteI did not enjoy that much the sequel to 5th wave. I just wanted to slap a few characters. And sometimes I did not know who's POV I was reading.
DeleteI have been meaning to start so many of these series!! Hope you enjoy these :-)
ReplyDeleteRadiance sadly is underratted. And all the books of this author are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI really, really need to finish the Abandon trilogy - I read the first and the second books and LOVED THEM, but I've forgotten most of what happened, so I'd need to reread the first two to get to the third, and I never have enough motivation to do that. :(
ReplyDeleteHope you'll be able to finish all these series! :)
I need to continue the Perfect Ruin series. I loved the first book! :-)
ReplyDeleteI really need to continue The 5th Wave series. I read the first book and loved it, bought the second book but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Great topic this week!
ReplyDeleteI've been really wanting to read that series by Grace Draven but I honestly haven't heard much about it. Glad to know it's one your into!
ReplyDeleteA lot of these series are either ones I started and never finished or never started but always wanted too! Good luck conquering your TBRs!
ReplyDeleteI'm fairly certain I'm the only one that hasn't even STARTED Under the Never Sky. Someday. lol
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I finish 2 series a year on average so I totally relate. Though, I do always hope to finish more!
ReplyDeleteI have The 5th Wave series on my TBR but not really willing to get to it anytime soon because of the bad ratings for the series finale, sigh.
