Review:A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Antari, a rare magician who can travel between parallel worlds: hopping from Grey London — dirty, boring, lacking magic, and ruled by mad King George — to Red London — where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire — to White London — ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne, where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back — and back, but never Black London, because traveling to Black London is forbidden and no one speaks of it now.

Officially, Kell is the personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see, and it is this dangerous hobby that sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to take her with him for her proper adventure.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save both his London and the others, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — a feat trickier than they hoped.

So right now I just set my mind that all the Londons are neighbor countries and the only ones that can cross the border are Holland and Kell."

27.0% "I do not know how to feel about this book. The writing is really good, is like I like it because of that but at the same time is boring me. I do not like Rhy, he is annoying. Kell ... there is nothing great yet about him. I believe I will like Holland."

The writing was really good, but the story was boring. I thought that it was getting interesting, but I was wrong. Almost 50% into the book and nothing great happened. All the characters were boring, no personality at all.
I think this book is overrated .

  1. This one is definitely slow to start. The last half is definitely awesome because it picks up the pace a bit more and gets a lot more interesting. The sequel is the exact same way: slow start but stronger last half. I find Schwab focuses a little too much on needless detail in her writing at times and it really shows in the first half.

  2. You are right. I was reading and thinking" do I need to know this?", "Is this important?"
I am glad to hear that the other half of the book picks up really fast, I might finish it after I am done with the book I just started.
