Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. |
This week's theme asked us to come up with characters that everyone else loves that we just hate, or vice versa.
This list was impossibly hard for me to put together! I swear, I spent more time thinking of who I could pick than I did making the silly little avatars for everyone, and if you knew how long that took I'd just have to die of embarrassment :p
I happened to have Vampire Academy on my mind whenever I read this week's topic, and so this one was the only easy one from this list. Adrian lands solidly in the "I really don't get why everyone loves you" category. Not that there is anything wrong with him, necessarily. In fact, it's really hard to pinpoint exactly what I dislike about him. But everyone kept telling me when I started the books (really late to the party!) that I would fall in love with him, and he was just wholly underwhelming.
As for Sydney, everyone also told me how much I would hate her and that she was such an awful character. I think because they kept saying that, it made me expect something much worse than what we got. Sydney is far from my favorite character, but I ended up liking her a lot more than I thought I would! It's funny, a lot of my book club friends won't read the Bloodlines series because of Sydney, even though they love Adrian. I won't read Bloodlines cause I just don't care about Adrian, even though I like Sydney!
Even thinking about these characters or this book, my brain just thinks "blah, blah blah." These characters were so boring, and I just couldn't understand what all the hubbub was about them. Ethan was annoying and Lena was the different girl cliche. There was nothing about them that made me want to read more about them at all after the first book.
I didn't really hate Sam, but I definitely never felt the warm and fuzzies for him, and I definitely didn't see how Anna could choose him over Nick. Nick was so much more interesting and far less bland hero than Sam was. Team Nick all the way!
This will be pretty disturbing for those who read the Lorien Legacies series but Setrakus Ra is pretty sexy villain.

As evil as he was, I still found him pretty hot!
|
I haven't read the Vampire academy books, but I did kinda want to see the movie (mainly because Lucy Fry was in it, and I liked her in an Australian show I watched) although I heard mixed things about it. I need to watch it one of these days...
ReplyDeleteThe books are great! I am a super fan of VA books and I loved the movie. To me the problem was that they made it look like a "Mean Girls" type of movie.
ReplyDeleteawwww How funny I really liked Adrian and Sydney. I guess it's fitting since I didn't like Claire and Jamie =D I think Adrian was by far my favorite guy and Sydney while not Rose was still great in my mind. I love your cute avatars. I haven't read any of the others yet.
ReplyDeleteAdrian just didn't do it for me. And then when he made Rose promise to give him a shot when she came back, I just couldn't with him. He knew that it wasn't what he wanted, and he still made her promise anyway so that he would help her!
DeleteI've never heard of any of these books, but your blog looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you :) It's a lot of fun doing the designs!
DeleteI LOVE your graphics!! SO nicely done! Thanks for stopping by My TTT
ReplyDeleteThanks :) It was so much fun putting it together this week!
DeleteOMG I HATED CHRISTIAN. (I feel very strongly about this, apparently.) And I was pretty bored the entire time I was reading BC, which was unfortunate because it was a cool idea and I really liked the setting.
ReplyDeleteBored is the perfect word for how I felt during all of BC too! I wanted to like it so much, but man, it was just a snooze fest.
DeleteI haven't read any of these books, so I don't have an opinion either way. I love the images though. Very cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks! This was a fun week :)
DeleteWow! LOVE the graphics! I'm seriously impressed that you two put so much work into these posts. Christian, though I didn't necessarily hate him, could never ever compare to the insanely beautifuler Tucker. I mean, for christ sake, he was a gentleman AND a cowboy! And I can completely see why people wouldn't initially like Sydney, though she goes through a major transformation during the series and comes out a totally different person. Great list! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Ever since I discovered Adobe Illustrator, TTT has become my favorite part of the week :p And yeah, i could see why others wouldn't like her! But for some reason, I never could dislike her!
DeleteAllyson takes all the credit to make it look so cute! And she loves doing it!
DeleteCute Avatars!!! I haven't read any of these books, but I kind of want to now to see if I'll agree with these. Especially Altered... I definitely want to read that
ReplyDeleteThanks ;) I hope you like Altered whenever you start it! I really did enjoy it and the sequel, though I wish that Sam had been a little more interesting of a character.
DeleteI love all the graphics, it makes your list so fun!!! I have to say I have not read all of these but now I want to read them so I can know!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks :) TTT graphics are the highlight of my week! I hope you find something you love form our list to add to your own TBR!
DeleteI haven't read many of the books your characters are from, but I totally agree with the characters from Beautiful Creatures! I didn't love that book at all and I could see what was going to happen in the rest of the series and I just wasn't interested.
ReplyDeleteGreat list, guys! And I love your graphics! Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)
BC was just so boring and cliche! I totally agree about being able to see what was going to happen from the outset, and that didn't help matters.
DeleteAnd thanks :) this week was fun!
I haven't read any of these unfortunately. Lovely post and great layout.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
Thank you :) and thanks for stopping by!
DeleteOh my goodness the little avatars are adorable!! You are way more committed than I will ever be! ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't finished the Unearthly series, because I'm scared of how Christian is going to mess things up... I love Tucker so much in the first book. I need to finish so I can get some closure.
I tend to get a little too absorbed in the TTT posts and spend an embarrassing amount of time putting them together :p but it's fun!
DeleteI agree about not finishing Unearthly for the same reason! Someday I will get over the fear and just read it ;)
I agree about Beautiful Creatures. I didn't find either of them truly developed. (The writing was beautiful, though!). Great list!
ReplyDeleteYes, they could have used a lot more character development! Thanks for stopping by :)
DeleteI have never understand Christian's appeal in the Unearthly series and to think that some prefer him over Tucker...are you serious? Nice list!
ReplyDeleteAww, I never thought of Sydney. I didn't realise she got hate! I liked her, though not as much as Rose. I haven't read Beautiful Creatures, but I enjoyed the film., and I'm not familiar with the rest of your list...
ReplyDeleteLove the blog!
Everyone in my book club hated her! It was pretty intense the hate fest she got when I started reading the series last year! I think that's why I ended up liking her, because she was nowhere near bad enough to deserve all of it :p
DeleteThank you!
Oh bummer. I loved Adrian and Sydney! And Puck!! Not familiar with some of these other ones though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my post!
I agree with people about your graphics. You've put your heart and soul into this. I have a question, though. What is 'BC'? I get the impression it doesn't stand for my home province.
ReplyDeleteThank you :) the graphics is my favorite part of the blog, so tend to get overly invested!
DeleteI swear, I meant to go back and add the full titles to the descriptions. BC is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Maragaret Stohl. An unfortunately underwhelming series :( it would be funny if they were from your home province too, though!
So... shockingly, I haven't read any of these series!! I did see TMI movie/tv show though and I only loved Valentine in the movie because of the actor. Haha!
ReplyDeleteHere are my Top Ten!
Valentine in the movie was so incredibly different from the Valentine in the book! He was a little weirder and more psycho in the movie. In the book he was definitely a bad guy, but he had a kind of elegance to him that they didn't give him in the movie.
DeleteThe little pictures are so adorable! And it makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only person who puts a whole bunch of time and effort into things I'm not even getting paid for lol. I haven't read any of these though! But I plan to read some of them. I think I might even own some of them... so I'll have to get back to you on whether I agree with your choices or not :-P
ReplyDeleteHaha, you are definitely not alone in that :p I do spend so much time setting up each TTT, if only there were job potential there :p
DeleteI'm so ashamed to admit that I own the first few of the VA books and haven't read them. I haven't even watched the show. I'm a bad vampstress. :( But, I'm familiar with the characters because many of my friends love the series. Those pictures are so amazing with this list!
ReplyDeleteIt took me forever to read VA, but I promise, they are very good books! If you love sarcastic, strong heroines, it's the series for you! And thank you :)
Deletehaha this weeks was hard and love the avatars! Though I am on the opposite team on the Vampire Academy picks I love them! I can kind of see the Beautiful Creatures picks as they were okay for me but haven't read any of the others accept for TMI which I agree with 100% lol.
ReplyDeleteWow!! so love the avatars you included! :)
ReplyDeleteI liked Valentine too! Not sure why...but I did anyway. Great picks. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these, though I have been curious about Vampire Academy.;)
ReplyDeleteVampire Academy is a great series! All of the books were goods. I hope you read them soon.
DeleteWow, I actually haven't read any of these, except the first book in the TMI series, haha. But I really want to get back into this, so I guess I'll see if I feel the same way about Valentine as you ;)
ReplyDeleteHe is still evil, but a sexy evil :P
DeleteHow cleverly done this is! Good job!
ReplyDeletehttp://readerbuzz.blogspot.com/2016/03/chicago-tulips.html
love the avatars for these! I totally agree with Ethan and Lena... I could not get through that book honestly. I also have mixed emotions about Christian and Sydney. thanks for stopping by my TTT! love your blog!
ReplyDeleteSadly from you lists I have only read The Mortal Instruments - I can see why you'd find Valentine hot. I must also say your character avatars are just lovely!
ReplyDeleteHe is sexy! :P Plus I always had something for the villains !
DeleteI didn't like Adrian all that much in the Vampire Academy series, however, I liked him better in the Bloodlines series, although I still have to finish half the series. I never really had a problem with Sydney, I didn't even know some people do.
ReplyDeleteI SO agree with you about Beautiful Creatures! I didn't care enough for either of them, so I dropped the series. And I still have to read Vampire Academy, but after reading and loving JLA's Covenant Series I just haven't wanted to try something so similar. Maybe someday or not, but thanks for the heads up about the characters! :) I ♥ the pictures of the characters you created!
ReplyDeleteVampire Academy is so much better than the Covenant books. I only read Half Blood nd I did not want to keep reading the rest because it is just like VA, even though I was told the rest of the series is different.
DeleteThis is such a fun list, I love all the avatars :) I completely agree about Puck, I really loved him and I did not completely understand the appeal of Ash!
ReplyDeleteI did not see anything great about Ash. He was so serious all the time, . The fourth book was the last I read from the series. I won't keep reading the rest.
DeleteI'm so sad, because I thought think that the Sydney in the Vampire Academy Series and the Sydney in the Bloodlines Series are two different people. I loved her in VA, but she disappointed me is Bloodlines.
ReplyDeleteGreat Top Ten!
I am one of the people that would not read Bloodlines because of Sydney. I never liked her in VA.
DeleteInteresting list! I don't think I've read any of these books.
ReplyDeleteHow bad is it that I haven't read any of these books.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love the avatars! They are gorgeous!
I feel as though I've completely forgotten reading the Beautiful Creatures series, because I know I didn't get on with the characters at the time (well, I thought Lena was cool but Ethan was a bit of a damp towel) and I never think of them for any of these lists.
ReplyDeleteI adore the little sketches of the characters though - so cute! :)
I definitely though Valentine was a complex interesting villain. XD Not...hot...though. xD HAHA. But I would've TOTALLY handled a series about his childhood, eeep! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
These graphics are simply divine, and I could stare at them all day! I'm kind of sad to see you thought Beautiful Creatures was blah because it's been buried in my TBR pile for a while now [/casually buries it a little deeper]. The only character choice I really have any opinion on is Valentine whom I actually wholeheartedly despised... not because he was a villain or anything but because I thought he was bad at being a villain. Maybe he gets better in later books?
ReplyDeleteYou're too right - Ethan and Lena are soooo boring!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my TTT.
I'm crying over the fact that I've heard about ALL of there series, and yet I haven't read a single one. I feel SO illiterate.
ReplyDeleteYOUR BLOG IS SO PRETTY! EEEEEK!
