Like many women drawn to spycraft in earlier years, Bella was discouraged from setting her sights on top-level jobs that were reserved for men. She excelled in covert work that took her into dark places around the globe. Following all the rules, she took advice from the women who came before her by getting to know all of the players and by having informants and confidantes who depended on her. Eventually, a station chief showed up who needed her network and the rest became building blocks on a career that few women could rival.
It wasn’t a man who abducted and killed the leader of a rebel group trying to destabilize the elected president of a certain African nation by performing a series of terrorist attacks and suicide bombings. The rebel leader simply disappeared off the face of the earth and, when Bella showed up back at headquarters at Langley, Virginia, everyone knew who had risked her life to do what no woman had ever done.
Standing 5’ 10” tall, with a lean muscle mass, Bella was an expert in every lethal art there was and some that were top secret and never saw the light of a Senate oversight committee. The Church Committee changed a lot of things for the CIA but not the foundational culture that is predicated on stealth and covert existence, and acts of cunning and bravery that must be left undiscoverable, including death-defying feats of espionage.
No one ever suspected a woman like Bella to have the career she did, which is why so many women in intelligence have such success. The element of surprise, when a woman turns lethal, defaults to her benefit. Her varied background made her a natural, but her presence was one that people often remembered, which worked against her. It was, however, Bella’s formidable persona that provided the power required to best her adversaries.
She had enthralled Phyllis from the moment they had first met. They’d become friends for life over the years. So, when Force Protection was formed, Phyllis introduced T.J. to Bella. He knew upon reviewing Bella’s experience that she would be invaluable to his organization. Malcolm had to be convinced, which she had taken as an interesting challenge.
Her initiation into Force Protection came on a job in Mexico in which she had the starring role. Bella’s task was to get information from an informant they’d used who’d been turned and eventually captured by FP. She sat down with a jug of mescal and a pack of cigarettes, attempting to make friends with him. Matching the drug king shot for shot, she had extracted what they had needed and had handed him a cigarette. While he was smoking, she quietly walked around behind him, took a knife out of her jacket pocket and slit his throat. In that moment, she was made.
