Raven turned back to Matthew, rolled her eyes, and grabbed his hand. She pulled him along, laughing. Before he knew it they had crossed and were walking on the sandy side of the shore. She talked, still holding his hand, and pulled him along.
“This sand was brought in by the truck loads. Took a good couple of years before the weeds grew up enough to cover the crushed path.”
Her voice was soft and sounded like music on the wind with the waterfall playing in the background. He stopped listening to the words, getting lost in her touch. It was warm and refreshing. She hadn’t been shy about whether or not to take his hand. He knew he should let go of it, because he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea, but instead of letting go, he found himself holding tighter, following her every move.
“Hey.” She stopped.
He looked up from her hand and smiled. “What? I’m sorry. What did you say?”
She dropped his hand, tossed her backpack on the ground, and pushed him toward the water.
“Hey,” he said, resisting. “What was that for?”
“You weren’t even listening to me, ya big putz.” She shoved harder.
“Putz? Did you just say putz? Is that even a word?” He held her back with one hand and bent over and splashed her with water. She squealed, pulled away from his grip, and pushed him, again. They both lost their balance and fell into the water, laughing.
She crawled onto the beach and rolled on her back. He followed and lay on his side, his head resting up on his elbow. “What were you saying?” He ran his hand through his wet hair and shook the water on her.
She tried to catch her breath. “I asked you a question, but if you want to just tune me out, that’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”
He grinned. “I didn’t mean to, I just was thinking about something.”
“About what?”
His grin deepened and the heat filled his face. “Nothing.” He looked down at her. His breath quickened. He wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her.
Her face softened. Her hand touched his arm. “You can tell me. I’ve told you my darkest secrets. It might be nice to know one of yours.”
Matthew took a deep breath and stared into her eyes. They appeared inviting, like she felt the same way. His heart pounded so fast he knew she could hear it.
