Life on Base: Quantico Cave by Tom & Nancy Wise
Published by: Koehler Books
Publication date: December 23rd 2015
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Synopsis:
For Stephen, his life on base is much the same as most other children’s. The difference is in the details. Look both ways before crossing a tank path and be sure to check if the spent bullet casings you find in the long-abandoned trenches are actually empty. Sports stop at the sound of the evening trumpet call as he and his friends stand at attention while the flag is retired. Quantico Cave is a story of friendship and competition, and when Stephen meets up with a friend he once knew at a previous home station, the contest hits a whole new level that places everyone at risk.

 EXCERPT
Some kids came and went fast. Stephen looked at the empty unit across the street. Those kids from Germany had just disappeared in the middle of the night. When things happened back home in their own country, no matter the time or day, foreign soldiers and their families had to go. He tried to remember the older boy’s name.
“Christof?” he said out loud to test it. “Yeah.” He thought that was correct. He and his brother had come over Saturday mornings to watch cartoons since they didn’t have a TV.
They loved to watch the commercials more than the shows, which seemed pretty odd, but as Christof explained, “They don’t have commercials like this back home.” His favorite commercial was for Levi jeans, Stephen remembered, with people flying
around wearing jeans.
Like Luis and his parents, who came from Argentina and had lived across the street for a couple months, a lot of foreign military families came to the base for training. And then one day they’d just be gone. He saw a familiar form scuffling down the cracked sidewalk that passed in front of the duplex ranch with a shared driveway. Rick? He squinted. No way.
“Mo—om,” he yelled. They had lived on the same street in California and had moved a year before Stephen’s family left. “Mom,” he shouted again without daring to look away. “It’s Rick.”
“Rick, from California?” His mother came into the room, wiping her hands on a dishtowel.
“Yeah.”
“Isn’t he the kid you had so much trouble with?”
“Not too much. We got along okay.”
“Didn’t he get suspended for fighting?”
    “Only once.”
“And that was only second grade,” he heard Mom say as he sprinted for the door and burst from the house, shouting Rick’s name as loudly as he could. Once in a while, paths crossed Once in a while, paths crossed again, thousands of miles away. He pulled up to a walk as Rick turned with a stunned look on his face. “When did’ja get here?”
