Top Ten Tuesday: Freebie

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week's theme was a freebie, and we decided to do a list of books whose covers were so gorgeous we had to buy them, but the story just didn't live up to the cover.

This cover makes me want to go out for a walk in the snow and find my mysterious, charming supernatural lover. But I would definitely have a more interesting love story than this book did. Read my review here.
I wanted to love this, but it just wasn't in the cards :( Read my review here.
This book was just blah. Nothing great about it. But I loved the cover! Read my review here.
Hahaha, seriously, this book! I just wanted to slap myself for reading it! I started it because of the cover, seemed like a very mysterious and dark story. It did not live up to the cover at all! Read my review here.

This cover is really cool. Too bad I did not like the book. Read my review here.
I am a sucker for a girl in a dress running away on a cover. I don't know what it is about it, but it's always catches my eye and leads me down paths I shouldn't go! And that was definitely the case here with Eve. Seriously, you have post-apocalypse, evil government entities, secret facilities. I mean, all of the elements are there to make an action-packed, exciting story. Instead, we get an illogical, poorly written and absolutely boring waste of my life. Seriously, I want the time I spent reading this book back.
Look at that cover! It's so pretty, and the synopsis sound amazing! And yet, all of the characters are so drab and boring, and the the story leaves you far from satisfied.
This one makes the list not only for having an awesome cover, but because the author is seriously good looking. When we went to a signing he was at, my friends and I all acted like teenagers, wanting to get pictures with him, giggling all the while. I wanted to like this book so much, just so that if I ever ran into Scott Speer at another signing, I could at least have something to talk to him about. However, this book was just not for me. I couldn't care about any of the characters, and I felt disengaged the entire time I was reading it.
The colors and artwork for this are just gorgeous. The second I saw it, I knew I was going to buy it. But man, I wish I had taken the time to even read the first page, cause that's how long it took me to know that this book was not good. I gave it another 50 pages, and seriously wish I could have that part of my life back, too.
I have pretty good suspension of disbelief abilities, I mean, I enjoy the crap out of some of the most makjang Kdramas out there. I can forgive a lot, and still stay invested in the story. This book just did not hit that sweet spot of believable unbelievability. The teenagers acted nothing like teenagers, the reveal of the killer at the end was just ridiculous, and Nearly was just the most annoying character I have ever tried to connect with.

    1. Nope! Some days I might be feeling a little nicer about it, but for the most part I wasn't a huge fan :p I kind of think it was because I was reading way too many amazing fantasy novels at the time. It's like if you had just read the Falling Kingdom first book, and then followed it up with a fantasy that was just kind of boring. After reading something so amazing, the kind of boring feels really, really REALLY boring.

  2. Isn't it just so disappointing when the cover is gorgeous but the story just isn't?

    1. Seriously! You'd think it would teach us to stop buying books based on covers, but it hasn't sunk in just yet :p

  3. Some books are lucky they have pretty covers and they still have a home to decorate my shelves, the ones with the ugly cover and bad story do not have the same luck, they end up at the library :P

  4. I gave up on Immortal city as well. I had such high hopes for it too! But I had no idea the author was a hottie!

  5. Oh boy do I know what you mean about some books not living up to their cover! My favorite up there is Nocturne, too bad the book did not live up to it!!

  7. Oh man nothing like gorgeous covers hiding a boring book. Sadly, I do judge books by their covers a lot of the time... despite the fact that it's no guarantee the story will be any good, lol.

  8. I read the Eve trilogy so long ago and I thought all three books were five star reads - I've read so much since then that I kind of want to reread them, but I know I'm just going to be disappointed! This is the first place I've heard bad things about 'Kiss of Deception', though, so thank you for standing out from the crowd!

  9. The crushing disppointment. A mediocre book getting a spectacular cover should be outlawed! I've not read any of these and I feel duly warned not to be drawn in by the pretty. This post is practically a PSA.

  10. I hate it when a great cover is marred by a lackluster story! Kiss of Deception is one where every time I see it I think it has a nice cover, but I haven't read it yet. Many of these do have nice covers, too bad they were disappointing.

  11. I had the same problem with EVE. The description made me hopeful for a Young Adult version of Margaret Atwood's A HANDMAID'S TALE, but I ended up being so disappointed.

I'm also bummed to hear that NOCTURNE was a letdown. That cover is so beautiful!

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

  12. I haven't read any of these (although I might own some of them because I'm a sucker for pretty covers), but I hate when the covers are deceptive. I actually a discussion post about it, because I just started a book where the main character is described as having a pixie cut, but the model on the cover clearly doesn't, which irks me.

    1. How hard is it to find a pretty cover with a girl with a short haircut? Why would the author even let that happen?

  14. I wasn't a huge fan of Hidden Wings or Kiss of Deception either :/ The rest of these I haven't read and it sounds like maybe I shouldn't, haha!
