Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. |
This week's theme asked us to come up with a list of books that we really love, but feel like we haven't talked about much in a while.
There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and Sunshine just needed a spot where she could be alone with her thoughts. Vampires never entered her mind.
Until they found her...
Zoe is wary when, in the dead of night, the beautiful yet frightening Simon comes to her house. Simon seems to understand the pain of loneliness and death and Zoe's brooding thoughts of her dying mother.
Simon is one of the undead, a vampire, seeking revenge for the gruesome death of his mother three hundred years before. Does Simon dare ask Zoe to help free him from this lifeless chase and its insufferable loneliness?
Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies . . .
Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires - the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.
After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger . . . and the Strigoi are always close by.
Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever . . .
I have a gift
I'm more than human
My touch is power
I will fight back
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.
But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.
Allyson says: This book is just hilarious! Evie is one of my favorite heroines. She is so spunky and sarcastic, and you can't help but really love her. And Lend isn't so bad, either :p
She could save the world—or destroy it.
Sixteen-year-old Evangeline "Evie" Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they're still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.
But she can't do either alone.
With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can't totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?
Who can Evie trust?
As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it's not always clear who is on which side.
Allyson says: I guess I have a thing for characters named Evie. It has nothing to do with my adorable niece named Evie, I'm sure! The Evie in this story isn't quite as funny as Paranormalcy's Evie, though you can forgive her that as the apocalypse has fallen down around her head. Jackson is the real star of this book. Often crass, it's easy to find fault with him. But then he will do his knight in shining armor bit and it's all too easy to forgive him!
What's an American girl with a big mouth, but an equally big heart, to do?
Lizzie Nichols has a problem, and it isn't that she doesn't have the slightest idea what she's going to do with her life, or that she's blowing what should be her down payment on a cute little Manhattan apartment on a trip to London to visit her long-distance boyfriend, Andrew. But what's the point of planning for the future when she's done it again? See, Lizzie can't keep her mouth shut. And it's not just that she can't keep her own secrets, she can't keep anything to herself.
This time when she opens her big mouth, her good intentions get Andrew in major hot water. So now Lizzie's stuck in London with no boyfriend and no place to stay until the departure date written on her non-refundable airline ticket.
Fortunately, there's Shari, Lizzie's best friend and college roommate, who's spending her summer in southern France, catering weddings with her boyfriend, Chaz, in a sixteenth-century château. One call and Lizzie's on a train to Souillac. Who cares if she's never traveled alone in her life and only speaks rudimentary French? One glimpse of gorgeous Château Mirac - not to mention gorgeous Luke, the son of Château Mirac's owner - and she's smitten.
But while most caterers can be trusted to keep a secret, Lizzie's the exception. And no sooner has the first cork been popped than Luke hates her, the bride is in tears, and it looks like Château Mirac is in danger of becoming a lipo-recovery spa. As if things aren't bad enough, her ex-boyfriend Andrew shows up looking for "closure" (or at least a loan), threatening to ruin everything, especially Lizzie's chance at ever finding real love...
Unless she can figure out a way to use that big mouth of hers to save the day.
Allyson says: It has been years since I have read this book, but Meg Cabot is always amazingly funny and writes characters that are easy to relate to and to love. And it's hard not to feel for Lizzie and all of the scrapes that her big mouth gets her into.
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.
Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.
Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer.. she might become his next prey.
Allyson says: I am a sucker for a good best friends falling in love story, and The Body Finder definitely delivers! Violet's power is pretty interesting, and she handles it with such grace that you can't help but root for her. And then there's Jay!
Marnie Wright has seen more than her fair share of testosterone, having grown up with four overprotective brothers. But now a longhaired mountain man named Jake Dolan has invaded Marnie's peaceful day of soul-searching at her grandmother's old cabin. Sure, she was trespassing on his property, but did he have to pull a gun on her? After being stashed in his secret underground lair-complete with security monitors and a huge arsenal-Marnie realizes that the guy is military, top secret military. Yet he also has the most beautiful mouth she has ever seen.
The last thing Jake wants in his dangerous life is a woman. He doesn't like them and doesn't need them. Still, a man would have to be dead not to fall for the sexy-as-sin Marnie Wright. But how can Jake have feelings for someone who may be killed just for being close to him? His days, after all, are numbered. . . .
Allyson says: Cherry Adair is just flat out amazing. I love her work, and she writes such amazingly heart racing stories with characters that you just fall in love with. Marnie and Jake are probably my favorite of her couples, and I defy any one to not fall in love with her fierceness or Jake's Spy King of the Universe sexiness.
Annette Curtis Klaus! I DEFINITELY read her when I was little and totally forgot. Thanks for the reminder. Loving your list - it's bringing back old school reads for me :) and SHATTER ME <333
ReplyDeleteI cried so much with The Silver Kiss is such a good book. I haven't read her other books though.
DeleteI LOVED reading The Vampire Academy Series!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat Top Ten! :D
My TTT.
I keep thinking I should give Vampire Academy a chance, but vampire books have a bad track record with me.
ReplyDeleteI had Percy Jackson on my list too. :) It's been ages since I thought about it without the Heroes of Olympus attached.
You should try Vampire Academy, the entire series is so good. And it is also so different from any vampire book .
DeleteI don't think I've ever met other readers that really enjoyed Sunshine, it's on my list too! Great post! :)
ReplyDeleteAllyson gave it to me and I LOVED IT! Everyone should read it, is such a great book!
DeleteI see a lot of good things about the "Shatter Me" books though I've not been tempted to read them (mostly because I have too many others on my shelf). Also, yay for Paranormalcy (REALLY want to read those) and Meg Cabot's (how cute does it sound!?). Fun list - and thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Lightening Thief! Unfortunately, I really didn't like Shatter Me... The rest are mostly new to me! Great list!
ReplyDeleteHere are my Top Ten!
OMG. Queen of Babble! I haven't thought about that book in the longest time!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, *high fives* for Lightning Thief! Thank you for visiting. :)
I have a very good, almost photographic, memory when it comes to books, but I read Vampire Academy last year and I have literally no idea what happened and can't remember any of the characters names. I think I need to reread the first book and then plow onwards with the series, or I'll never get through it!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices :)
Pretty flowers!!! The Body Finder!!! I definitely want to read that series. I've been wanting to read some backlisted titles, and that's one I totally forgot about.... but it's SO me that I should definitely read it. Thanks for reminding me :)
ReplyDeleteQueen of Babble sounds hilarious and cute. I need to look that one up!
ReplyDeleteI read A LOT of Meg Cabot's books, I think she's my most read author, according to Goodreads. But actually, I've never read Queen of Babble *hides in shame*
ReplyDeleteVampire Academy, Percy Jackson and Shatter Me are also books I really liked and it's ben a while since I read them! :)
