Top Ten Tuesday: Sophomoric Anticipation

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week's theme asked us to choose the sophomore novels that we are either extremely excited about, or sophomore novels that we thought were just as good as the debut novel. We are starting our list off a little differently! While there are plenty of sophomore novels that have been pretty amazing, or have the potential to be amazing, there are also some sophomore novels that are just a huge let down. So we decided to give a mix of some of the best sequels, along with some of the biggest disappointments. Also, some of these might not strictly be an author's sophomore novel, but we did our best!
I want to start this list entry off by saying that this isn't necessarily a bad book. The Body Finder completely and absolutely blew me away. I loved Jay and Violet so much, when they finally got their crap together and realized they were both in love with the other, I literally wanted to get up and do a happy dance. Cause really, I'm just that ridiculous about fictitious people. So when Desires of the Dead came along, there was no doubt in my mind that I would immediately buy it and read it. Unfortunately, Desires of the Dead just failed to capture that same feeling as the first novel, and I felt like Violet's character just became more and more annoying as the book went on. I still plan on finishing this series, but reading this book has made me put it on the back burner for a long time now.
This is another case of the first book being way too amazing for a sequel to live up to it! I liked Endless Knight OK, but it just didn't have that amazing feeling that Poison Princess had. Everyone was too whiny and annoying.
This one made the list for a kind of weird reason. I really loved Altered, I thought it was amazing. I mean, a reverse harem is pretty much my favorite thing ever. However, I honestly can't remember a single thing from this book, other than that Anna chose the wrong guy.
This book was even better than the first one! There was so much action, and so much more Mal in it. I have not read book 3, but I have no doubt that it is as good as the first two.

Supernaturally was so hilarious, and just so amazing. I was really worried that it wouldn't live up to my love of Paranormalcy, but I shouldn't have been. It was sheer perfection!
I think I have mentioned this before, but I was really disappointed when I saw that Alexandra Bracken was following up the perfection that was Brightly Woven with a dystopian series. Before TDM came out, I was incredibly anti-dystopian. Obviously that has changed since then, and so I picked up TDM with a grain of salt. After North, how could anyone measure up? Well, The Darkest Minds just blew me away and the characters and the world were so incredibly well done.

Everyone was getting on my nerves in this book.
I waited a super LONG time (yes because Susan Ee takes her sweet time to write a book) for World After but it was a huge let down because it was not good. It was boring and there was no enough Raphael in the book. I did not finish it .
It was not as good as the first one. And I needed more of Death.
And now for a list of Sophomore novels I am super excited to read!

  1. That's too bad about The Body Finder sequel. I read it a long while ago and never continued the series for some reason. Now this has me thinking I might not get to it after all. Hope you have a lovely week!

    1. Violet just started lying to everyone in the second book, and there was the slightest hint that a love triangle just might crop up and that was just an awful idea to me, so I was too afraid to continue on :p Hope you have a lovely week as well!

  2. Awesome blog title and gorgeous blog! Glad to hear the Grisha sequel is so good. I still haven't started the series! It's such a bummer when sequels don't live up to the original. Hope that The Darkest Mind series continues to wow you!

  3. I didn't really like Body Finder, The first half was so slow but it did pick up near the end. I don't think I would go out of my way to get the sequel. I was also disappointed with World After because I loved Angelfall. Looking forward to Girl of Nightmares!

    1. I loved The Body Finder from the beginning, so I don't know how much you'd trust my opinion of the second book. But the second book did seem to have a lot more going on from the start of it!

  4. I love the twist you guys took with your list - great job! So happy "Dragonfly in Amber" is on this list - such a great second book in the series. It takes it in a completely different direction. Even if each book in the series is huge, they're so worth it.

  8. I love the look of the book that follows Anna Dressed in Blood - I really need to read the first before I get even further behind.
