Book Review: Immurement (The Undergrounders, #1) by Norma Hinkens

The Sweepers are coming ... the only place left to hide is underground.

The earth’s core overheats. The sovereign leader vanishes. A young girl is the survivors’ only hope.

What little land is habitable is patrolled by cutthroat gangs of escaped subversives, but that’s not the greatest threat facing sixteen-year-old Derry Connelly, her brother Owen, and a ragged band of Preppers holed up in a bunker in the Sawtooth Mountains. Mysterious hoverships operated by clones are targeting adolescents for extraction.

Owen, is one of the first to disappear. To save him, Derry must strike a deal with the murderous subversives, and risk a daring raid to infiltrate the heart of the extraction operation.

But will the rookie leader falter when forced to choose between her brother and a clone who ignites something inside her she didn’t know was possible?

My Thoughts
I couldn't care less about any of the characters or the book. I just did not have any connection with them. I don't even know why Derry wanted to risk everyone's life to go rescue Jakob (by the way , why don just name him Jacob? why make it fancy with a "K"?) It was just plain boring and I had to stop on 44% because I have been trying to read this for 11 days and I could not take it anymore. It wasn't bad, it was just OK. But I don't want OK anymore. I want to read epic stories.

Also, since her mom died her dad went all depressed and alcoholic and neglecting his children. Why do I see this often in books? I see that they always portray men as weak. Wouldn't a father do anything in his power to take care of his kids? That is what the mom would have wanted.
Also they did not have enough food, how did he get the alcohol?
I just did not care for it.

Blog Tour + Giveaway : Exodus by Amanda S. Reaves

Literary / Fantasy
Date Published: September 11, 2015

With the Astrians disappearance and their home, the Spectrums, destroyed; the planet of Zanali no longer has its angelic protectors. Now that SIN is allowed to run rampant and free, those who dwell on this planet watch as their people and land become corrupted by its temptation. Temptation, the beast that serves as a walking energy source for SIN, grows stronger everyday with seemingly no opposition. But is that really the case? Hope may lie in a single woman, drawn to search for an ancient relic she isn’t sure exists; and a shunned princess whose curse could very well be a divine blessing in disguise. Meanwhile, Dymona becomes the council’s next target as she struggles to try and free Ambrose from their hands, and learn the secret behind their actions.  Could the unexpected help from an otherwise cold-hearted ruler be the key to setting them both free? Is he the answer to her long-standing prayer?

Excerpt 1

“I think Zephyrus has become obsessed.” Said Dymona long after he’d gone. “He’s had a vendetta against that serenda girl and now has taken to trying to kill you.”
Alex laughed, holding his side. “Glad I’m that important to someone.” He led her out to the shore, kneeling to dip his hands into the water, to partake of the cool liquid. “So what did he mean by the ‘you will end up just like Ambrose’ bit?” He could feel some of his strength returning.
She narrowed her eyes. “Apparently, our council has deemed a fellow zavi a threat, for some unknown reason, and locked him away in the dungeons.” She folded her arms. “Since he was really the only person I’ve ever confided in, I felt obligated to try and break him out,” she continued, trying to make it sound as if there were no weird feelings surrounding her intentions. “Now I’ve been made just as much a target as he has and been sent on a mission they are hoping I don’t come back from alive.”
Alex sipped more of the ocean water from his hands. “I thought you were already a traitor.”
“I am. But they left me alone until I tried to break him free.” She sighed. “Whatever it is he found out, The Council is really trying to keep it from being exposed.”
Alex thought about this for a while, as he kneeled there, staring far out across the ocean. He thought about his current situation, as well as Dymona’s. He thought about his wife, and how tired he was of being her doormat. He wanted to be free. He wanted to be himself. He no longer wanted to be defined by his ancestors. He felt strange; as his eyes scanned the horizon, he felt a silent urge, like a small, still voice, that wanted him to help her. He weighed his options, but the still voice touched his heart and a warmth filled his body. He wasn’t sure if it was The Exalted One or not, but decided to take a chance. He turned to Dymona and grinned. “How about we really stir things up then?”
“What do you mean?” Dymona raised a brow suspiciously.
Alex disappeared into the shadows and then reappeared right behind Dymona, whispering in her ear “Let’s break him out.”
Dymona screamed, jumping away from him and staring, “What are you doing?! Are you crazy?!”
Alex laughed more. “Crazy? Yes.” He showed his fangs, “Always have been.” He took a few steps closer to her, “Let’s be crazy together. What have you got to lose?”
Dymona still looked at him suspiciously. “Why do you want to help me all of a sudden?” Her hands hugged her hips. “Besides, you are in no condition to do anything.”
Alex shrugged with a maniacal grin. “Didn’t you say one becomes irrational once madness sets in?”
She pointed at him. “That’s only for zavi. Anger and rage tend to do that.”
“As a sentinel, we are taught not to let the wounds of the body prevent us from doing what needs to be done.” He glanced at her.
“What about the wounds in your brain?!” she flailed. “What do you really want?”

Champions: at fire’s end (Champions, #1) excerpts

Excerpt 1. April
The buzz through the room was like a thousand heartbeats, all pounding at once in a thunderous cacophony. Crackling embers cascaded down around me, raining from blistering walls which had once provided safe haven in a world gone mad. Sickening creaks echoed from aged floorboards, threatening to buckle beneath me at any moment. When had a voyage to escape my own fury gone so terribly wrong? Floorboards just beyond reach burst and erupted in a wave of heat, sending wooden splinters showering through a room on fire, across a ceiling teetering at the edge of calamity. My heavy limbs went to throw my body away, wanting to shield my face from the blast, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t.
A weight from above pressed down, pinning my back against shattering floorboards. I pushed away at the thick wooden beam lying across my stomach, but it refused to budge against my blistering hands. I was weak, strength and energy sapped away into feeble fury. Fury which had landed me in my current predicament, trapped, in a burning house that my abilities had lit. But it was all wrong – rage should have made me stronger, like it had done in the past.
The past. When an angry young girl had been shipped halfway across the world to study abilities that I could not harness nor hope to control, only to return, lose control all over again at the most crucial stage of our battle, and be thrown back – hidden once more in a foreign land under the calm watch of a foreign master. As the Taguchi household which had held so much kindness crumbled before my eyes, I feared that I would never return, and Kyle would once again be left alone to fight our war on his own.

Chapter 1

“There are things darker than night, darker than the souls of wicked men or a woman of unchained passions. Believe me, for I have known them well.”
Josette Savoy Abrams
Beach Rose House. Bar Harbor, Maine

Most people went to church to save their souls, but not Dad and I. We went there to see the priest about treasure.
It was a cold day in February and the church was an abandoned stone chapel on a back road near our home in Vermont. With its gloomy stained-glass windows and carvings of gargoyles under its sagging eaves, the chapel was exactly the kind of place where antique pickers like Dad and I could find the weird treasures and the gothic furniture our customers loved to buy. And, as luck would have it, the bishop had given the local priest permission to sell the entire contents as he saw fit.
The priest glanced once more at the grungy pews and the statue of St. Anthony with its chipped fingers and peeling paint. “Now that you’ve seen everything, are you still interested?”
Dad gave my shoulder a squeeze. “What do you think, Annie?”
“Ah--” I let my voice crack as if my jitteriness was nerves instead of excitement, then I met the priest’s eyes.  “One price for everything, right?”
“For all the contents. That doesn’t include anything that’s part of the structure. No windows, attached light fixtures, doors, none of those sorts of things.” His tone left no room for debate.
Dad looked down, scratching his elbow while I took a scrap of paper and a pen from the turned up sleeve of my bulky sweater. I jotted down the offer he and I had covertly agreed on when the priest had turned away for a moment, then handed it to the priest.
The priest’s brow furrowed as he studied the paper.  He ran a finger under his collar, cleared his throat, and finally glanced at Dad. “Perhaps you should look at this before we agree?”
Dad waved off his suggestion.  “This was her idea. The offer is hers to make.”
“All right, then,” the priest said. “We have a deal.”
I counted out a thin stack of hundreds and gave them to him.  In turn, he passed Dad the church keys, all neatly labeled.  The truth was, he wasn’t the sort of person who would have ever believed a twenty-year-old girl with ripped jeans and a stud in her nose could know the first thing about valuing antiques—as Dad and I had hoped.
“Sorry I can’t stay and help,” he said, “but I have to get back to St. Mary’s in time for Mass. When you’re finished taking what you want, leave the keys in the box outside the door. I hope you find enough to make this worth your effort.”
“I hope so too,” Dad said, without cracking a smile. But, as soon as the priest went out the front door, he did a little victory dance and gave me a kiss on the cheek. “Perfectly played. If I’d given him an offer that low, he’d have thought I was up to something for sure.”
Every inch of me tingled with anticipation. “So, where do you want to begin?” I asked.
Dad jangled the keys. “It appears the priest neglected to give us one very specific key. The one to the only room he didn’t take us into or even mention.  I don’t know about you, but that makes me curious.”
“The sacristy?”  I said.
“That would be the one. Did you notice how he fidgeted with his collar, too?”
“I figured he thought everything was junk—that he was nervous I’d offered too much and that you’d back out.”
“That’s possible. But don’t ever underestimate your opponent. There could be something else behind his uneasiness. Perhaps he hid something in the sacristy, something of value he hoped the diocese would forget. Priests are men, after all. They come in all shades of honesty, like the rest of us.” He stroked his chin, a sure sign that he was about to launch into one of his home-brewed tales. “You remember the story about my wicked great-uncle Harmon and the Canary Island sirens? He always claimed to be a spiritual man, forthright and faithful to his wife. . . .”
I loved listening to Dad’s crazy stories. But, as he began an abridged version of a tale that easily could have gone on for an hour, the word faithful sent my mind veering in a different direction--to me and Taj and a matinee of Romeo and Juliet, to his practiced fingers slipping under my skirt, up my inner thighs. The rush of desire. His words hot and moist against my neck:  “Oh, baby, c’mon. I want you so bad.”
Men come in all shades of honesty for sure.

Excerpt

“Why are you so upset?”

“I'm angry because you keep denying me when it's clear you want me. To top it off, you come to my club and dance with countless men right in front of me,” Ethan growled.
He ran his nose down my neck before licking away a bead of sweat. I gasped. The hand that he had moved to my waist slipped underneath my top. He caressed my belly before running his fingers further down, making every ounce of me come to a dull ache. Against my will, my body moved in ways to encourage him to travel further south to take full advantage of me. Ethan's hands settled along my waistline, lazily trailing his fingers along it. My mind screamed one last time that this was not an option for me. In a last-ditch attempt, I paused his hands so he wouldn't go any further. Ethan whipped me around to face him. The passion in his eyes was unmistakable.

“I'm trying to do the right thing,” I moaned.

His hands drifted underneath my shirt and up my sides on their way north this time. As he progressed along my rib cage to the lower line of my bra, he moved us off the dance floor. Ethan pushed me up against a pillar at the far end of it. He brought his body right into mine. He tossed in an occasional thrust of the hips as he pinned me, just to remind me how very well he knew my body. Ethan cupped my breast with tender strokes of his hand before pressing his lips on a spot underneath my ear lobe. It was enough to melt every part of me. I was throbbing all over for him.
“You want me. I want you. I don't care what's right or wrong,” Ethan hissed.

I tilted my neck as he trailed deep kisses down my collarbone and exposed shoulder. I wanted him so much that it was close to making me burst. I moaned even louder when his teeth grazed the crook of my shoulder. He sucked along my neck with eagerness, making no effort to hold back his want for me. I slanted my head to bring my lips vigorously down on his. My tongue drifted across the top of his mouth before his tongue met mine where they danced to the beat with the music around us. My hands moved down to his hips as he pumped against me. I slid them even further down to his ass. Ethan responded by grinding harder and grabbing one of my legs to raise it around his hip.

Our bodies melded together in an erotic dance as our mouths devoured each other. I lost myself in the music, in his lips, in his body, in his hands, and in the desires he brought out in me. His hands ran up and down my body while his lips and hips brought me to the point of no return – I ached for him.

Excerpt

Did I say how much I hate Dr. Bazely’s office? It starts with the reception area, which always has this citrusy smell. It’s like cheap perfume, and it gets into my hair and my clothes, so I smell it for days. Of course, there are magazines to read during the wait, and there’s always a wait no matter when you arrive, but the magazines come in two flavors: National Geographic and People. Right, gawk at animals or gawk at humans, your choice. Before we sit, we have to deal with Martha, the receptionist.

“Hello, Martha,” Mom says, as we approach her desk.

“Zoe,” Martha responds with faux pleasure. Her smile is like a Halloween mask she slides down over her face whenever she has to interact with clients. For some reason, they refer to us as clients, not patients. Whatever.

“Dr. Bazely will be with you momentarily,” Martha states, as she always does.

I sit next to Mom and scroll through the texts on my phone. Sara has texted me 10,000 times, Hannah and Tory only slightly less. According to Tory, she spent all first period this morning answering one of two questions: Does Zoe have a brain tumor? and Is Zoe rabid? I also have a text from Derek, but strangely nothing from Alex.

Hey, fox ninja warrior, the wildlife around here wants to know if it’s safe to come out, Derek texted.

I laugh out loud at this and text back, Tell the animals crazy girl is in Boston for the day.

He immediately replies. You looked kind of sexy holding that shoe, you know.

I roll my eyes. That’s what I was going for all right—the sexy, scared shitless look.

“The doctor will see you now,” Martha says, rising to lead me back to his office.

I stow my phone in my back pocket, and Mom gives my hand a gentle squeeze of encouragement. My sessions with Dr. Bazely are one-on-one. No Mom. No Dad. Bazely usually does confer with Mom after we’re done, but he’s made it clear to me many times he will not breach the confidentiality of our sessions with anyone. So even if it turns out I’m an axe murderer, my crimes will remain a secret from my mother.

Dr. Bazely’s office is like a nice den, all wood paneling, comfy, an overstuffed couch, and two wingback chairs. I sit in my usual chair and he sits in the other one halffacing me. A round table is strategically located between us. His shiny, bald head reflects the overhead light like a mirror. Dr. Bazely is never mean with me, but I resent him. He never tells me anything. He knows stuff about me, but he won’t share it with me.

Counsellor by Celia Aaron

Counsellor by Celia Aaron
(Acquisition #1)
Publication date: September 28th 2015
Genres: Erotica, Romance

Synopsis:
In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law.
Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it — Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair’s slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness.
As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood.

Excerpt:
“You are testing my patience, Stella.” He stopped and pushed me up against the wall. His eyes bored into me. “Don’t ask Farns questions like that. He can’t help you.”
“I can ask whatever the hell I want.” The cocktail of emotions roiling inside me had made me bold, even in the face of Vinemont’s wrath.
His gaze travelled over my face, down to my lips and then back to my eyes. “That’s where you’re wrong.”
He gripped my hair and pulled my head to the side. His mouth was at my ear again, his Southern drawl whispering darkly to me. “I thought I made it clear that I own you now. You do as I say. If you don’t, I’ll make sure your father feels the brunt of your punishment.”
He stepped into me, pressing my back into the wall and crushing me painfully. I yelped at the sudden aggression. He clapped his free hand over my mouth. I hit ineffectually at his sides, his back. I even tried to knee him, but he took advantage of my efforts and pushed one of his large thighs between my legs and lifted so I was straddling him.
“Fuck.” It was a gravelly whisper.
My heart beat faster and faster, panic welling up inside and drowning out any other emotion. He was going to hurt me. Right here, right now in this sunny hallway.
He pulled my hair harder and harder until I thought he would rip it out. I stopped struggling.
“Better. Here’s how this is going to go, Stella. You are going to stop trying to make trouble. You are going to do as you’re told. This year will pass by much easier for you if you just follow my orders. You can fight me.” His lips moved down to my neck, a hairsbreadth from making contact. “And I’m not going to lie, I like it when you fight. It makes this easier for me. But you won’t like the results.”
